general information

Name: Maria Barcelito (original バルセリート; occasionally it's translated as "Balsereit," but Barcelito seems more likely to me.)
Gender: Female
Age: ~19
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Brown
Appearance: my baccano image collection contains over 500 images yet Maria is still sorely lacking in artwork
Continuity: Baccano! 1933 - The Slash: Cloudy to Rainy chapter 2.

essential personality

~ Bright, friendly, and full of energy - she's always looking for something to do or someone to bug.

~ And by "do" and "bug" I mean cut. She has an immense fascination with her two Japanese swords, Murasamia and Kochite, and is obsessed with using them to chop up everything she can.

~ Extremely prideful and confident in her abilities.

~ Mentally immature and often oblivious to the seriousness of any given situation. Reckless and a little dumb.

~ Usually in good spirits and difficult to bring down.

~ Eager to please and to show off.

miscellaneous tidbits

~ Maria is a novel-only character! The Baccano! anime is amazing, but it's actually only the tip of the iceberg - as of my writing this, there are sixteen light novels, of which the anime only covers three. The Eve Genoard/1932 arc of the anime is actually the novel Maria first appears in; however, due to time and budget limitations, the storyline of the arc was altered dramatically for the anime adaptation, and Maria's appearance (as well as those of a few other characters, such as Roy Maddock and everyone's favorite train monster Claire Stanfield) was cut out of it the anime. Now, as a matter of fact, I can't read Japanese, so my writing of this character is based on the translations available at Baka-Tsuki and Sporeblog.

~ And Maria is in the anime! For like two seconds doing nothing. (Ignore the red arrow pointing at Dallas.)

~ She doesn't believe in cleaning or taking care of her swords. They're probably a little nasty.

~ She was raised by her grandfather. Her parents, who were also assassins, were murdered... by her grandfather. Maria is aware of this and doesn't care at all.

~ Has tolerable cooking abilities.

~ Refuses to use guns, even in the day and age of machine guns -- like her grandfather, she thinks they're ugly and inferior to the sword!

~ Is unofficially part of the Gandor family, but doesn't really understand how the mafia works outside of "a bunch of guys who like to kill each other."

~ She originally lived on the Mexican border. How she ended up in Manhattan is a mystery, but probably involved her line of work - hopping from place to place in order to find clients.

~ Maria will pretty much do anything that the eldest Gandor brother, Keith, says. However, he barely ever talks. You're lucky if you get one word out of him per month. Thus, the other Gandor brothers are left trying to tame her, though she usually submits to the youngest, Luck Gandor.
